For more than three decades, New Orleans instrumental rock band Woodenhead has consisted of guitarist Jimmy Robinson, keyboardist Fran Comiskey, drummer Mark Whitaker and bassist Paul Clement. Deep into Woodenhead’s 43rd year, the musicians continue to map out fresh territory. On Friday and Saturday at Chickie Wah Wah, they’ll record a live album consisting of all-new material. They’ll play two sets per night, starting at 9 p.m. And thanks in part to the Threadheads Cultural Foundation, admission is free. 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Chickie Wah Wah, no cover.

With just a handful of other schools invited, the Mount Carmel Academy theatrical ensemble prepares for an international competition with "Silent Sky," opening 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The school remounts its production for the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska. The play is the story of Henrietta Leavitt, an early 20th-century female astronomer whose calculations became one of the cornerstones of modern astronomical science.
