A man was arrested by Lafayette police this week after attempting to carry a firearm into the Comeaux High School stadium before a football game.
The Lafayette Parish School System’s weapons detection system safeguarded the Madison Prep versus Southside High game on Thursday when it alerted officials to the firearm, according to LPSS
Ethan Lundberg, 19, was arrested after attempting to walk into the game with a weapon, according to the Lafayette Police Department. He faces one count of possession of a firearm in a firearm free zone.
LPSS Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. emphasized the district’s ongoing commitment to providing a secure environment for all students and staff.
"The weapons detection system is just one part of our robust security efforts designed to ensure the safety of our students and community," Touchet said. "We've discovered that Lafayette Parish schools and facilities are among the safest not only in the state, but in the country," he stated.
The school district allocated $2.3 million to security improvements last year, and rolled out weapons detection systems on its middle and high school campuses at the start of the 2023 school year. Initially, those systems were used for visitors on elementary campuses, but is now be used for all students and adults.
"These initiatives reflect LPSS’s unwavering dedication to creating a safe learning environment where students can thrive academically and socially," Touchet said. "The recent incident serves as a reminder of the importance of these measures and the commitment of LPSS to uphold the highest safety standards."
Lundberg was booked at into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
