Settled
Southern’s offensive staff took a long time to settle on a starting quarterback in preseason camp and by Game 2 they were already making a change. A bad start by Noah Bodden gave redshirt freshman Czavian Teasett the opportunity he needed, and it looks like he might be the guy going forward. Teasett looked more poised than the junior Bodden, he operated with confidence and his passes were decisive with zip. It’s not for sure he’ll start next week but it seems more than likely.
Still rock solid
The strength of this Southern team is obviously defense, which smothered the visitors and made them look hapless. If it continues to play this way, the Jaguars won’t need a powerful, explosive offense, just one that scores enough to win. The defense pressured the quarterback, blanketed receivers and made a stand whenever the Tigers got close. Aside from the long TD run, attributable to poor technique, the defense was nearly perfect.
Wake-up call
Coach Terrence Graves can’t be happy with his team’s response to last week’s loss and opening night at home. Except for the defense, the Jaguars looked listless overall in the first half and more like a Division II team than its opponent. A lot of that may have had to do with Bodden’s struggles. The offensive line was inconsistent and never took control of the line of scrimmage, a place where Southern should have had a huge advantage.
